Breastfeeding mamas have yet another reason to be grateful for herbal medicine. Galactagogue is a term used for a herb that nursing mothers can take in order to increase their breast milk production. While “Galactagogue” may be a modern medical term, this practice is quite ancient. Herbs have been used to help with milk production in nursing mothers in many cultures for thousands of years. Herbal Galactagogues can be an amazing tool, but mothers should seek out help from a doctor or lactation specialist about their milk production issues before taking them. Whether a galactagogue will be effective or not can depend on the larger issue of what is causing the low milk supply. Additionally, Galactagogues must be used with effective breastfeeding or pumping practices in order to work.
Low Breast Milk Supply? Try these tips:
The more you breastfeed your baby, the more milk your body will produce. Feed your baby whenever they want for as long as they want. Remember the more frequently you completely deplete your supply, the more your body will make. Always offer the other breast once one is empty if your baby is still hungry.
Attempt to sleep, rest and relaxation
We know it can be almost impossible to sleep with a newborn. However, lack of sleep can be detrimental to your breastmilk supply. If your lifestyle allows, try to go on a nursing vacation. Reduce social actives and just take some time to focus on nursing your baby, resting, and relaxing. Perhaps this is wishful thinking. But think about how you can do this if possible.
Stress does not necessarily decrease your milk production, but it can constrain your flow. Do what you need to to keep stress in check. Ask friends and family to take on tasks that might stress you out. Don’t accept overnight guests for several weeks until you have established a supply.
Establish A Support Network
Reach out! Other moms who are breastfeeding, family members who have gone through it before chances are you have a support network ready and willing to help you. If not, then try online. There are countless message boards and online communities of new moms who may also feel vulnerable as they establish a milk supply. Don’t wait to start establishing a support network.
